Environmental Graphic Designer Jacques discusses why Banded Iron is one of his favourite designs from the Terrain collection.
Nestled in the ancient gorges of the Hamersley Range in the Pilbara region are the amazing crystal-clear pools and waterfalls surrounded by signature red rock formations.
The unique layered, slate-like appearance of these rocks spectacularly represent the passage of an estimated 2.5 billion years of geological evolution and one cannot help but be awed by the sheer majesty of these natural sculptures.
With this design, I wanted to represent the fascinating irregular linearity and faceting of the rock in a naturalistic, organic way. The interplay of positive and negative space emulates the interaction of the various layers of rock and the dotted treatment of the water evokes its fluidity and contrast to the hardness of stone.
Banded Iron Chocolate is my personal preference as it has a delicate earthy brown colour that is both reminiscent of the earthy structures that it represents as well as being subtle and neutral enough to work well as a mural element. Its organic and non-geometric appearance adds a very natural note to an interior space.
