The Discus story began in 1993 in a West Leederville lounge room with a $17,000 HP colour plotter. With backgrounds in drafting and printing, Carl Mendelawitz and Peter Benjamin saw the opportunity to make some extra money. The pair, while maintaining their 9-5 jobs, worked through the night printing and finishing digital colour prints, posters and lightboxes for clients that included Transperth and Burswood Casino.

Fast forward 25 years and Discus is now Perth’s leading large format print and signage company, employing 30 staff and operating from a 1600sqm owned premise on Scarborough Beach Road.

Carl says never in their wildest dreams did either Founding Director foresee the business growing to the size it is today.

“It’s been with a bit of luck and a lot of hard work, but the plan was never to be as big as what we are,” says Carl.

But growth was inevitable for Discus. Demand for its products and services increased each year as the company cemented its reputation for delivering on quality with outstanding service.

Carl says Discus adopted a client-centred approach from the start with the company boasting a loyal following of clients from a variety of sectors including marketing, building & construction, events, interior design, hospitality and retail.

“Our clients trust us with their projects and brands so we never want to let them down. We’ll move mountains to make sure that at the end of the day our client is always happy,” says Carl.

Employing the best talent has been equally paramount says Peter.

“We’ve got the finest in the business working with us. We’ve recruited to ensure we have a robust skill-set with decades of experience. We are really grateful to have a team that is honestly so dedicated to being the best at what they do,” says Peter.

A crucial key to the company’s success has been, and remains, getting in first with technology.

Discus acquired Perth’s first grand format printing machine in 1999 – a 3.2metre Scitex Gandjet S3 – which allowed local advertisers to print their outdoor advertising materials in Perth instead of the East Coast.

The $500,000 investment paid off and Discus has gone on to expand its suite of large format print technology over the years ensuring it’s always had the best to offer Perth. Recently the company acquired one of Australia’s first HP Latex R2000 printers, which uses environmentally friendly water based latex inks and gives exceptional quality and colour gamut.

Over the years Discus diversified to include the production and installation of signage and other customised solutions, which is now a large part of what it produces today.

Nowadays Peter and Carl get to enjoy taking a backseat to the everyday running of Discus.

General Manager Steve Filear leads a crew of production, sales, design & marketing, installation and admin personnel that design, project manage, produce and install print and signage solutions for some of Perth’s biggest brands and businesses.

Steve says the way Discus works is through a unique partnership with its clients.

“Our clients don’t just see as a supplier but a resource with particular expertise. We collaborate with them on their projects, bringing new ideas and methods to the table to help realise their goals,” says Steve.

And there are future big plans in play for Discus.

“We are driven to maintaining our position as leaders – to remain top of our game,” says Steve.
